  • Abstract

Environmental aspects are playing a vital role in the machining process, as research is more inclined to find an alternate system to replace coolant used in machining processes or at least to reduce the amount of coolant used in the machining process. At the same time, it is also desired to improve the machining performances like tool life, surface roughness, cutting forces, retention of mechanical properties of the material, etc. The primary objective of this research work is to analyze the effect of under-cooled coolant at 00c on machining parameters on SS304 and determination of the optimum temperature of coolant for best performance. A unique experimental setup is designed and fabricated to reduce the temperature of the coolant and another set up to measure the temperature generated at the tool face during machining. It was observed that at a temperature close to 00c has substantial improvement in various machining parameters, as well as quality aspects of the job, take place. The manufacturing industries can effectively use this technique as it provides an alternative to cryogenic machining.
