A library is a treasure-house of knowledge. Libraries are an integral part of the education system and Education system remains incomplete without the library. A well-stocked library is an asset to the parent institution. K J Somaiya Polytechnic library is also an asset to the parent institution. Our Library is situated on ground floor and mezzanine floor with a sitting capacity of 150 students, which includes reference / reading section, and circulation section. There are more than 35,000 books in our library (including part time full time and YCMOU). We have 16 national journals, 4 Magazines 6 newspapers of English, Hindi, Marathi and Guajarati languages. Our library has a good collection of dictionaries, handbooks, encyclopedias for reference and enhancement of knowledge. Our library strives hard to satisfy the information needs of our users.

Library Rules

  • Student has to carry the Identity Card for library use.
  • Students must observe complete silence in the library. Discussion/conversation/unbalanced talk with colleagues is not permitted except for the brief and subdued talk with the library staff at the circulation desk.
  • The Student/Staff has to produce the ID card for issuing the books, and the student has to produce the Identity card for in-house reference books.
  • Eatables are not allowed in the library.
  • Chewing gum or Chewing Tobacco is strictly prohibited in the library.
  • Use of mobile phone is strictly prohibited. But at the same time if the student wish to click the photo of any question paper, or any important drawing he will be allowed to do so with the permission of the library staff.
  • Sleeping or keeping Foot on the tables, Chairs/ are not allowed in the library.
  • Library material should be handled with utmost care. Nobody should write, highlight, damage on any of the library materials. The library books are carefully examined after return and if any damage is found, the borrower is held responsible for defacing or damaging the books. The student will be then asked to replace the book with a new book.
  • On receiving a book, student must examine it for any kind of damage. If pages are torn etc, such damages should be immediately brought in to the notice of Library staff. Failing to do so he/she may be held responsible for any such kind of damage detected later.
  • The Librarian reserves the right to recall any book before the due date if necessary, and the student has to return the book on the date mentioned by the librarian.
  • Prohibition of journal writing, cutting of the Pages, Pasting the Pictures etc activity in the library.
  • For any other matter concerning the library activity, decision of the Principal will be considered final.
 

Library collection is developed to serve information needs of the users in a timely and economical manner. The library houses a variety of resources in print and digital resources covering various aspects of Diploma in Engineering and also areas like general reading, Humanities, etc. Book bank books for Regular and Unaided diploma are available separately. The library resources are accessible to the students, faculty and staff of the college and also the users of the Somaiya Vidhyavihar and Ayurvihar campus.

Procedure to procure the books: Book catalogue from various publisher, received are sent to respective departments for selection of titles along with number of copies. The concerned faculty will recommend the book of their subject and choice for purchase. On receiving the recommendation from various departments and getting principal’s approval, the books are ordered for purchase.

Orientation Programme

An orientation programme is organized every year at the beginning of the academic year for all First year students. During orientation the librarian provides information about the Library in detail. Library staff will train students regarding the library, online services, the rules and regulations etc. Similarly the newly appointed faculty is made aware about the library activities.

Circulation/ Home issue

The members of Polytechnic have to carry the Campus ID for issue and return of the book. The student has to claim for the book by writing the Students details like enrollment number, name and the details of the books like -author title. After 2 hrs the book will be made available for the student.

2.2 Issue Norms for Students, Faculty & Staff

One copy of the book is made available in the counter for in house circulation. The student has to submit his/her ID card and make entry in the register maintained for use. The in-house reference book has to be returned before 7.00pm else Rs. 10/- per day is to be charged.

2.3 Self-renewal of books

The Library allows users the option ‘Self Renewal’ of borrowed books through Web OPAC on or before the due date using their SVV user id and password. The user will not be able to renew the book after the due date. The renewal can be done for one time and the user should be a member of the library.

2.4 Online Reservation of books

The user can reserve the book from the library (Not applicable for GCC). If the book is issued, reservations can be made through Web OPAC. As soon as the reserved book is returned, users will be intimated through an automatic email. The reserved book is kept reserved for one day. Books which have reservations are not allowed for ‘Self Renewal’ and are also not possible to issue to other users.

2.5 Global Common Circulation (GCC)

Global Common Circulation is a facility available in Somaiya campus libraries by which any student or faculty member belonging to any of Somaiya Institutions can avail the K J Somaiya Polytechnic library facility. Similarly, KJSP students can also avail the library facilities of other Somaiya Institutions. The books will be issued for a period of 1 week. Failing to return on due date users will be charged with Rs.10/day.

Reminders

Reminder facility is available for the library users. Reminders are sent to the users in order to remind them about the library resources that they need to return. A Gentle Reminder email is sent seven days before due date of a book to faculty and staff and one day before the due date of a book to the students. An Overdue Reminder email is sent after the due date of a book to all users periodically. An Intimation Reminder email is sent to users if any book issued by them has a further reservation. Also, an intimation email is sent to the user who has reserved the book.

Book bank

Book bank facility is available to students for both the semesters. The student has to pay 10% of the cost of the books to library as the charges. The number of books issued will vary from students demand and also the availability of the number of copies. Timely notification is displayed on the notice boards and also website for filling the application form for the book bank.

Current Awareness Service

Current content pages of print journals are scanned and sent on mail for ready reference to the faculty for their reference. Department wise mail is sent.

Online Search for Resources

The user can search for library catalogue lists of the books, bound volumes, standards, book bank books and other media available in all the Somaiya libraries. The search can be done through the Library online link.

Digital Question papers

The past question papers of all the subjects of odd and even Semester is scanned and uploaded. These can be accessed by our users using SVV user id and Password.

Reprographic Services

Photo copy facility is made available at the main gate of the college for all the users.

Request for ID

The request of student and staff for missing and broken ID cards is processed through library.

 

Library has good collection of general readings, motivational books. Through book exhibition helps the user know about the library collection. The orientation for fresher’s will be conducted time to time.

Users can search for books by author, title, keywords, etc. The search is not limited to the parent institution, but it is extended to the Vidhyavihar and Ayurvihar Campus. Search result will display books available in all libraries of Somaiya Institutions. Results can be refined by Institute name, material type, material status, etc.
