About Department

We, Mechanical Engineering Department started functioning in 1963 with an initial intake of 40 seats. Later in 1966 the intake was raised to 60. Department was given autonomy by Government of Maharashtra in 1994.

We offer three years diploma which is divided in six semesters. The curriculum is designed as per the feedback of stake holders. The conducive environment at Somaiya Vidyavihar, excellent indoor and outdoor facilities supplemented by industrial visits and expert lectures help our students to develop their overall personality. Greenery in campus, sports facilities help in shaping overall personality of students.

Mission of Department:

  • Developing the curriculum to enhance skills and capability of students to make them competitive.
  • Making students aware of industrial safety practices.
  • Providing sustainable environment for over all faculty development.
  • Giving exposure to foreign language and creative arts.
  • To develop entrepreneurial attitude through curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • Using ICT for more effective teaching learning throughout the course.
  • Prepare the students to pursue life-long learning, serve the profession and meet intellectual, ethical and career challenges.
  • To prepare the students for diverse careers in mechanical engineering and related fields.
  • To provide students with a sound mechanical engineering education and application of mechanical engineering principles.
  • To prepare students to be immediately productive and able to adapt to and lead in a rapidly changing environment and to create and apply knowledge for the benefit of society.

Achievements

Department Achievements

  • Installed CNC Lathe in 2016.
  • Maharashtra Board of Technical Education awarded “Excellent” Grade in 2018 in External Academic Monitoring and consequently was exempted from Monitoring in 2018 – 19 academic year.
  • CNC machine purchased from the institute development fund is installed and training of students is in progress.
  • Total renovation of Hydraulics laboratory is almost completed with newly purchased equipments and will be fully operational soon.

 Lean Six Sigma Green Belt at TUV SUD office, Delhi/ Gurgaon From 17.01.2019  To  20.01.2019 through Business Excellence Consulting Group (BECG), Bhandup.

Twelve Days Training on Lean Six Sigma Black Belt at Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. Pvt. Ltd. Dharwad, Karnataka, From 01.08.2018  To 04.08.2018;    

  • From 03.09.2018  To 06.09.2018;and  From 03.10.2018 To 06.10.2018. 
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Training Program at TUV Office, Delhi between 14.03.2019 to 17.03.2019.
  • Resource person to deliver lecture on " Business Idea Generation and Evaluation Technique" at Start-Up Conclave 2019 under twinning activities with Mentee, Government College of Engineering, Rewa, M.P. under TEQIP III from 23rd January to  25th January 2019 at  Sardar Patel College of Engineering, Bhavan's Campus, Munshi Nagar, Andheri West, Mumbai - 400058.
  • Shri. Pravin Patil, Shri. Uddhav Palve and Shri. Nitin Choudhary published a paper on “A New Assessment Method” at the International Conference on Interdisciplinary Research for Sustainable Development (ISRD) 2016 at NITTTR Chandigarh on 1 – 2 December 2016.
  • Shri. U. N. Palve & Shri. S. S. Mane attended one week ISTE STTP on “Internet of Things and Applications from 2nd January to 6th January.
  • Shri. S. S. Mane attended one week AICTE (QIP sponsored) STTP Programme at VJTI, Matunga between  5th February to 10th February 2017 on the subject “Project Management for National Development”.
  • Dr.  J. R. Jadhav conducted session on “NBA-Evaluator’s Perspective” on 23.12.16 at MSBTE sponsored one week Faculty Development Training Programme on “Outcome  Based Education System of  NBA and SAR writing Techniques” at  M.H.Saboo Siddik Polytechnic.
  • Dr.  J. R. Jadhav delivered a guest lecture on & Enjoy the Learning" for Polytechnic students on 5th January 2017 at Father Agnel Polytechnic, Bandra.
  • Dr.  J. R. Jadhav was invited as Chief Guest and Judge for case study competition “Mindspace-2017” organised by Institute of Management & Computer Studies, Thane on 4th Feb 2017. The theme of the event was “Raise an Exclamation to Full Stop”.  
  • Dr.  J. R. Jadhav invited  to conduct pre-conference workshop on Blooming In Turbulent Business Environment : Sustainable Lean Implementation at International conference jointly organized by Quality Circle Forum Of India (QCFI)  and  Institute of Technology Management ( ITM) at Kharghar on 17th Feb.

  • Bro. Chetan Panchal & Bro. Atharva Mehta won Second Prize in State Level Technical Quiz competition “Pravinya 2019” organized by Pravin Patil College of Diploma Engineering and Technology on 18th February 2019.
  • Bro. Parth Doshi, Bro. Chetan Panchal, Bro. Atharva Mehta, Bro. Parth Mewada and Bro. Nikunj Panchal won Third Prize in State Level project competition “Technothon 2019” organized by Anantrao Pawar College of Engineering & Research Pune on 15th & 16th March 2019.
  • Sis. Shreya Rahate won Second position in “SKREAM 18” in the event Badminton (Girls Singles) organized by K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering, Mumbai
  • Bro. Raunaq Saraf, Fifth Semester Mechanical Engineering was Runner up in “Tech Mania” a regional level technical quiz competition held on 11th Febraury 2017 at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Polytechnic, Mumbai.
  • Bro. Ronak Oza and Bro. Yash Dodhia successfully completed the “3D printing workshop conducted at SVV RiiDL in August and September 2017.
  • Bro. Atharva Mehta and Bro. Yash Dodhia (both students of second semester Mechanical Engineering) exhibited their model “Portable Windmill” in “MakerMela 2017”. This model was appreciated by many visitors and two industrialists have invited them for further discussion and development of the model.
